This is when creativity can take a psychopathic turn

This is when creativity can take a psychopathic turnThis is when creativity can take a psychopathic turnNew research published inPersonality and Social Psychology Bulletinexplores some of the grimmer ideations of imagination. The studys abstract begins by detailing the many fruits of malevolent creativity, ingenious weapons, novel torture practices, and creativeterrorist attacks. The authors correctly locate the odd way in which experts eagerly recognize the difference in psychological origin of well-meaning and malevolent creativity, but few have cared to actually address it.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreSparse research conducted in the past has suggested that sometimes that apple upon Newtons head, sets in motion vehicles of cruelty and aggression a readiness to fight. This new study on the subject proposes, the following plainly Threats lead to more malevolent creativity and less creativity in threat-irrelevant domains. The methodologyTo further this postulation, researchers had to first evoke the threat of exploitation. They did so, by altering slightly, the classic Prisoners dilemma. Two members from the same gangart get incarcerated. Each prisoner is kept in a private cell with no way of reaching the other. The prosecutors dont have enough evidence to convict the two criminals on the primary charge, but they have enough to convict both on a lesser charge. Each gang member gets presented with a bargain betray the other by testifying that the other committed the crime or cooperate with the other by remaining silent. If prisoner A and B both testify against each other, both serve two years. If A betrays B, but B remains silent, A walks while B gets the max sentence. If both remain silent they both get two years. The researchers applied this to 192 college students, only they modified the stakes. Instead of prison time, the students were meant to play for a hypothetical amount of money. Participants in high threat situations, risked losing a substantial amount of money if one of their team members defected by reason of self-interest, while those in low-threat situations stood to lose a much smaller sum of money.Participants were additionally encouraged to utilize hypothetical bricks as a means of intimidation and negotiation. The study concludes, Social threat reduced nonthreat-related creative ideation only in Study 1. Study 2 showed that the increase of malevolent creativity was due to the motivation to defend and aggress, and emerged especially among individuals with a high need for cognition. Two studies proved the higher the threat, the more malevolent the means of using a brick to get team members to corporate. Higher threat level groups also tended to employparticularly aggressive negotiation tactics. Asthe studys lead author,Matthijs Baas of The University Of Amsterdam explained to PsypostWhen people are threatened by others, t hey are more motivated to defend themselves and aggress - and they think of more malevolent ideas as a result. Hemp Carbon Makes Supercapacitors Superfast

Hemp Carbon Makes Supercapacitors Superfast Hemp Carbon Makes Supercapacitors Superfast Most people dont understand the truly diverse value of hemp (Cannabis sativa). Cultures have depended on this hardy plant for centuries for clothing, fabric, and paper. Today, it is also used for food, fuel, medicine, building materials, and plastics. Now the energy storage industry is starting to take notice, thanks to new Canadian research that shows supercapacitors with electrodes made from hemp-based carbon nanosheets outperform standard supercapacitors by nearly 200%.Graphene, a carbon nanomaterial, is considered to be one of the best materials for supercapicitor electrodes. Graphene is, however, expensive to manufacture, costing as much as $2,000 per gram. Looking for a less-costly solution, researchers at the University of Alberta/National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT) NRC, and Alberta Innovates-Technology Futures, led by chemical and materials engineering Professor David Mitlin, deve loped a process for converting fibrous hemp welcheste into a unique graphene-like nanomaterial that outperforms graphene. Whats more, it can be manufactured for less than $500 per ton.Our work actually opens up a very cheap and mass-producible manufacturing method for graphene-quality materialsomething that has never been achieved before, says Mitlin.Hemp bast fiber is a low-cost graphene-like nanomaterial. Image Wikimedia CommonsWhy Hemp?Activated carbons, templated carbons, carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, and graphene have all been intensively studied as materials for supercapacitor electrodes. High manufacturing costs is one issueanother is that the power characteristics of many of these carbons are limited. This is a result of high microporosity, which increases ion transport limitations. It is becoming well understood that the key to achieving high power in porous electrodes is to reduce the ion transport limitations says Mitlin. Nanomaterials based on graphene and their hy brids have emerged as a new class of promising high-rate electrode candidatesthey are, however, too expensive to manufacture compared to activated carbons derived from pyrolysis of agricultural wastes, or from the coking operations.Biomass, which mainly contains cellulose and lignin by-products, is widely utilized as a feedstock for producing activated carbons. Mitlin decided to test hemp bast fibers unique cellular structure to see if it could produce graphene-like carbon nanosheets.Hemp fiber waste was pressure-cooked (hydrothermal synthesis) at 180 C for 24 hours. The resulting carbonized material was treated with potassium hydroxide and then heated to temperatures as high as 800 C, resulting in the formation of uniquely structured nanosheets. Testing of this material revealed that it discharged 49 kW of power per kg of materialnearly triple what standard commercial electrodes supply, 17 kW/kg.Promising ResultsMitlin and his team successfully synthesized two-dimensional, yet inte rconnected, carbon nanosheets with superior electrochemical storage properties comparable to those of state-of-the-art graphene-based electrodes. We were able to achieve this by employing a biomass precursor with a unique structurehemp bast fiber, says Mitlin. The resultant graphene-like nanosheets possess fundamentally different propertiessuch as pore size distribution, physical interconnectedness, and electrical conductivityas compared to conventional biomass-derived activated carbons. The nanosheets ranged in thickness from 10 to 30 nm with high specific surface area ( 2200 m2 g-1) significant mesoporosity (up to 58 percent), and good electrical conductivity (211-226 S m-1). Mitlin indicates the nanosheets are compatible for various ionic liquid-based supercapacitor applications from about 0-100 C.At 0 C and a current density of 10 A g-1, the electrode maintains a remarkable capacitance of 106 F g-1, notes Mitlin. At 20, 60, and 100 C and an extreme current density of 100 A g-1, t here is excellent capacitance retention (72%-92%). These characteristics favorably place the material among the best power-energy characteristics ever reported for an electrochemical capacitor. At a very high power density of 20 kW kg-1 and 20, 60, and 100 C, the energy densities are 19, 34, and 40 Wh kg-1, respectively. Moreover, adds Mitlin, the assembled supercapacitor device yielded a maximum energy density of 12 Wh kg-1significantly higher than those for commercially available supercapacitors. By taking advantage of the complex multilayered structure of a hemp bast fiber precursor, these high-performing carbons were created by simple hydrothermal carbonization combined with activation. We were delighted at how well this material performed as supercapacitor electrodes, says Mitlin. This novel precursor-synthesis route presents a great potential for facile large-scale production of high-performance carbons for a variety of diverse applications including energy storage, portable ele ctronics, uninterruptable power sources, medical devices, load leveling, and hybrid electric vehicles.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion These characteristics favorably place the new material among the best power-energy characteristics ever reported for an electrochemical capacitor.Prof. David Mitlin, University of Alberta

The ABCs of an Effective Cover Letter

The ABCs of an Effective Cover LetterThe ABCs of an Effective Cover LetterCover letters are the bane of existence for many job seekers (as the tweets below attest). Its unclear if anyone reads them or what employers even expect from them, and the rules are always changing.I hate writing CVs and titelseite letters ?? I am great, just hire me ??- Ashley Clarke (clarkeash) May 26, 2014I hate writing cover letters desperateforajob someonehiremeplz- Christina Malibiran (ChrissyMalibu) May 23, 2014Seriously the worst part about job hunting is writing cover letters. I hate writing cover letters- Bridget Brady (purrtygurl717) May 21, 2014I hate putting so much time into cover letters, assessments, posting job history EVEN THO my resume is attached, for jobs tht dnt even call- Pooh (_love_pooh__) May 20, 2014Used properly, cover letters can be a huge asset to your job search, but they do take time and effort to create. If youre wondering if its worth it to write cover letters, start by as king yourself unterstellung questions. Be honest. The answer to some or even all of them might be no.Do the companies Im applying to explicitly require a cover letter? Are there things about my work experience, accomplishments or rolleality that would be helpful to explain to hiring managers? Are there things I want hiring managers to know that arent on my resume or would be awkward to put on my resume?Am I willing to put in the time and effort to write a good cover letter? If youre still reading, its likely that you answered yes, or at least maybe, to one of the questions. Before you dive into writing your cover letter, here are some things to think about. The Truth About Cover Letters1. Your cover letter can mean the difference between getting an interview and getting ignored. For example, imagine that you really want to work as a recruiter, but you only havesales jobs experienceon your resume. By using a cover letter you can explain that many of the skills you use as a salesperson (su ch as cold-calling prospects, understanding client needs, making a case for the benefit of your product) can easily be translated into arecruiting job, which requires calling potential candidates, understanding candidate fit and promoting your company culture to top talent. Without a cover letter, a hiring manager may immediately decide that your skills are elend a fit because you dont explicitly have recruiting experience.2. Your cover letter can potentially hurt your chances mora than it helps them.A poorly written cover letter thats filled with grammatical mistakes signals to employers that you lack attention to detail. The rationale is that if you put so little effort into your cover letter, then how much attention are you likely to pay to your job? If you decide to take the time to write a cover letter, make sure its a good one.3. There are no universal opinions about cover letters. The truth is that there are very few absolutes regarding cover letters. Some hiring managers love them, and somedont read them. Some recruiters expect them as a formality, and sometimes resumes are passed around internally and get separated from their cover letter entirely. For this reason you should consider two rules of thumb as you think about whether a cover letter is right for you.Rule 1First, do no harm. If you have nothing to say, and you arent willing to take the time to write, proofread and spellcheck a cover letter, then dont write a cover letter at all.Rule 2If the application instructions say that a cover letter is required, then include a cover letter no matter what. Make sure to spellcheck it.Now that youve decided that you must incorporate a cover letter into yourjob searchstrategy, take a look at these real-life samples. If you were to grade your current cover letter according to these standards, what grade would your letter receive?Grade DI had talked a gentleman at the Name of school job fair on Date. He mentioned that I should apply for this position. This cover letter is worse than no cover letter. It actively works against the candidate. The letter is only two sentences, and it is missing a word. The letter says nothing about why the candidate is interested in the position or what skills might make this person good at the job. What we learned about this candidate based on this letter is that the candidate couldnt be bothered to proofread the letter and seemed to be applying solely at a strangers urging. Unfortunately these are not the key qualities that most employers look for in a new employee.Grade CThis letter is to express my interest in the job posting listed on your website. Based on my skills and interests, I believe that I would be a valued addition to your team. I believe there is a good fit between my skills set and requirements to this position This letter is an average, obligatory letter. It may not ruin the candidates chance of receiving an interview, bu t it doesnt enhance the candidate and is likely to be ignored.Grade BI was pleased to learn of your need for a job title. With solid Field A knowledge, extensive Field B working experience and excellent interpersonal communication skill, I am writing to apply for this position. Through my studies as a major at University, I have the opportunity to learn A, B, and C and to complement my theoretical research knowledge with hand-on training at Company M.This letter is a good start for a recent graduate. It is personalized to theadvertised joband tries to tie together school knowledge with the job duties. Some cleanup is needed to fix the typos, but this is a start to a potentially successful letter.Grade AI am writing to apply for the job title at Company. This summer I graduate with a degree in major and am eager to continue improving my X and Y skills in a company environment. I believe that my previous experience with X and Y make me an effective candidate for this internship. I am particularly drawn to this internship because my knowledge, skills and qualifications closely match those described in the job description. Please consider the followingExample 1Example 2Example 3While it may seem unusual for a graduate student to apply for a position such as this, I want you to know that I am interested in this internship because I want a career where I get to do activities 1, 2, and 3. I want to explore how activity 4 can improve critical function for a company. As a result, I am willing, and am able, to relocate to location (of my own accord) for this internship. This letter is great. It serves the purpose of providing more information about the candidate that a traditional resume cant. The beginning of the letter clearly tells us the status of the candidate, why the candidate is interested in the job and why she is qualified. This job seeker then provides several examples to support her claim that she is qualified for the position. She closes the letter by answer ing some potential objections or questions that a hiring manager might have, such as the perception that she might be overqualified or that she would expect relocation assistance. The required language and tone of a successful cover letter will vary by industry and culture, but the basics of this letter are sound. As you create your cover letter, use these samples as a guide of what (and what not) to do to vie for a spot on the interview schedule.
